Thousands of euros stolen from the offices of
Liverpool festival Africa Oyé

Africa Oye

HOUSANDS of euros were stolen from the offices of Africa Oyé just hours before the iconic annual music festival kicked off.
Thieves raided the organisation’s Hanover Street offices on Saturday, June 18, fleeing with cash meant for musicians who had travelled from as far as Tanzania, Madagascar and Zimbabwe.
More than 20,000 people flocked to Sefton Park for the 20th anniversary of the two-day event.
Organiser and artistic director Kenny Murray believed the raiders had purposefully targeted the company’s seventh floor Gostin Building office.
He told the ECHO: “It could be best described as a military operation.
“Someone knew what was here and went for it.
“We could have been watched or followed from the bank, we don’t know.
“It is the first time in 20 years this has happened, and it will be the last time it will happen.”
While refusing to confirm the exact amount, it is understood that several thousand euros were stolen.
The cash had been withdrawn from the bank to pay headline act Marcia Griffiths and the 11 other groups appearing in the park.
Oyé organisers said they were able to make the payments by drawing funds from elsewhere.
Mr Murray said: “We don’t have a large budget so it has been a slightly traumatic time.
“Every year we struggle to meet our budget. We had a show to put on and we needed to concentrate on that.
“We fulfilled all our payments to the bands and everybody is slowly being paid. Nobody has ended up unpaid because of the theft.
“We are a professional organisation. If we weren’t we would be in floods of tears feeling sorry for ourselves.”

KASEJA USO KWA USO NA SUPERSPORT
Kaseja
Juma Kaseja Juma is the most recognized and talented goalkeeper in Tanzania.
An automatics choice for the national team, he is the captain at Simba Sports club where he has played for the last eight years.
In a candid interview, Kaseja shares with SuperSport.com his life as a footballer, his wishes and thoughts on other football issues.
SuperSport.com: When and where were you born and which schools did you attend?
Kaseja: I was born in Kigoma on 13th April 1985 and attended Karuta Primary school in Kigoma upto class seven. Because of my football talent I went to Makongo secondary where I enhanced my career and started playing football seriously landing an under 17 invite.
SuperSport.com: Which team did you play for first in the Tanzanian league?
Kaseja: While in school I joined Moro United where I played for two seasons in 2001 and 2002 but I could not finish my second season since I was banned by TFF after I left camp and went to Sweden where I played in Gothia cup. TFF Banned me for three months for leaving my team but in 2002 I got my first call up to the senior national team where I played in the Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup in Mwanza.
SuperSport.com: When did you join Simba Sports club?
Kaseja: After impressing in the Cecafa Senior Challenge C on my debut, Simba signed me shortly afterwards and I have benn there since.
SuperSport.com: Tell us more about playing for the national team? Kaseja: When I joined the side in 2001, I was the second keeper but I later did my best and was the first keeper but unfortunately in 2007 I was dropped from the team for close to three years until Danish coach Jan Poulsen took over and recalled me to the team. SuperSport.com: How many caps do you have for Kilimanjaro stars?
Kaseja: I have over 65 caps for Kilimanjaro stars as the no 1 keeper.
SuperSport.com: Tell us about the between Simba and Yang and how it affects the local league.
Kaseja: The rivalry has been there for long even before I was born but I can say sincerely that the deep rivalry is affecting the players because we don’t get the support we need.
People have to change despite the rivalry because we get a lot of problems when we are playing continental matches where opposing teams get a great when they come to Tanzania since Yanga supporters give them total support and vice versa. At most times when you play at home you feel like you are playing away and this is not good for our football. The rivalry should stick to Simba and Yanga games but when we are playing teams from outside Tanzanians should unite and give is the support we need.
SuperSport.com: Having had an illustrious career for both the national tam and Simba, don’t you think its time you made a move to Europe?
Kaseja: It is my wish now but I have been unfortunate because every time I am linked to a team but after my videos are sent over, they complain about my height forgetting that it is about my talent. But I have not given up hope since I know God has good plans for me in my career.
SuperSport.com: Back to the Cecafa Kagame Cup do you feel you can proceed after the opening draw against Vital O’ of Burundi?
Kaseja: Our target as a team is to reach the final and win Kagame Cup. The first match is always difficult but we still have a chance and we are committed. Our coach identified the mistakes we did he will try and rectify them before our next game.
SuperSport.com: How did it feel lifting the 2010 Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup on home soil after many years of trying?
Kaseja: We were on cloud nine after the victory and personally to me it meant a lot since I had won many titles including the league and what was remaining was winning a title with the national team. Winning it meant a lot since many people did not have belief in us as a team but we told ourselves in camp that if we worked hard, we would succeed.
SuperSport.com: On a lighter note, what are some of your hobbies?
Kaseja: I love Congolese music, reading books, music and watching movies.
SuperSport.com: There is a perception among fans that you live a fairy tale life as Simba pays you so well, what can you say about that?
Kaseja: hahaha, the perception has been there for quite some time but I would like to tell all my fans that Kaseja lives a normal life just like anyone and I do the things everyone does since I was brought to respect family values.
SuperSport.com: Who are your role models both locally and internationally?
Kaseja: When I was growing up I looked up to Mohamed Bameja as I wanted to be like him but internationally I have always admired Real Madrid’s keeper Iker Casillas. I do everything like he does and try to copy what he does on the pitch since he inspires me.
SuperSport.com: What have been some of your lowlights as a footballer?
Kaseja: Football is my life and at one particular time I had problems and people said a lot of bad things about me; some saying Kaseja is finished and some saying nasty things which really discouraged me but I fought hard and told myself I had to face my problems which I faced like a man with the help of God and survived.
SuperSport.com: what has been your biggest highlight?
Kaseja: First I thank God for where I have reached in football. So many people want to get to this level but they have not managed but football has given me a fresh breath of life and help me to become the man I am now.
SuperSport.com: Are you married?
Kaseja: Ohh yes I am married to my beautiful wife Nasaro Juma but we have not been blessed with children yet.
SuperSport.com: What advice could you give to the youth who are aspiring to be like you Kaseja?
Kaseja: The young players should first have the will, dedication, discipline and commitment and above all they should train hard since nothing comes on a silver platter.
SuperSport.com: Finally Kaseja is there anything you’d like to tell your fans?
Kaseja: I want to tell my fans I love them and thank them so much for the continued support because without them I would not be where I am now. I urge them to continue praying for me and hope I will one day make them happy when I play in Europe.

Tanzania to have new constitution in 2014

Mh. Pinda
DAR ES SALAAM (Reuters) -
Tanzania will present a new constitution in 2014, a year before its next parliamentary and presidential elections, Prime Minister Mizengo Pinda said on Saturday, amid opposition pressure for reform.
Pinda said a constitutional review bill is expected to be tabled in parliament by October of this year.
Increasing poverty, unemployment, high food and fuel prices and allegations of corruption have been eroding support for the ruling party in east Africa's second largest economy.
President Jakaya Kikwete was re-elected in an October vote marred by a record low turnout and rigging accusations. He faces an ultimatum from opposition leaders to fix the economy, tackle graft and deliver a new constitution -- or risk mass protests.
Opposition leaders, clerics and rights activists want to limit presidential powers, introduce electoral reforms and allow independent candidates to stand for parliament and president.
Among their demands are a change in the law to allow presidential results to be challenged in court and the formation of an independent electoral commission.
"It is the government's expectations that the new constitution will be complete and ready for inauguration on April 26, 2014, when marking 50 years of the union between Tanganyika and Zanzibar," Pinda said in a statement from the prime minister's office.
Mainland Tanzania (formerly known as Tanganyika) joined with Zanzibar in 1964 to form the Union of Tanzania.
Kikwete has promised to appoint a team to work on a new constitution after growing calls for changes to the country's political system.

Raila urges Kikwete to legalise miraa

Raila Odinga

Published on 25/06/2011

By Patrick Muriungi

Prime Minister Raila Odinga has regretted alleged harassment of miraa traders in Tanzania and promised to raise the issue with President Jakaya Kikwete.
The PM, who was speaking at the miraa growing zone of Igembe North in Meru County on Friday, said he would urge the Tanzania leader to allow commercial market of miraa in his country, where it is currently illegal.
He regretted that miraa traders and consumers are often harassed and jailed by the Tanzanian authorities, and said he will spearhead legalisation of the produce to enable farmers in Meru benefit from the trade.
"I understand issues concerning miraa as one who has in the past chewed it. In Tanzania, our fellow Kenyan miraa traders and consumers are harassed and arrested. We shall open up discussions with Mr Kikwete to allow the exportation of the twig", said the PM.
He was responding to requests from Higher Education Assistant Minister Kilemi Mwiria and other leaders who had asked for his intervention to introduce trade of the commodity in Tanzania, which is within the East African Community free trading zone.
It was the second time in less than two weeks that the PM was visiting Meru County. He was in the area again recently at the invitation of Igembe South MP Mithika Linturi at Maua stadium.
Linturi who spoke during the function said he will rally together residents of Igembe community to support the most suitable candidates for President of Kenya and the posts of Senate and Governor in Meru County.

Bin Laden courier's phone provides leads

Osama
WASHINGTON (AP) — A cellphone of Osama bin Laden's trusted courier recovered in the U.S. raid last month that killed both men in Pakistan contained contacts to a militant group that is a longtime asset of Pakistan's intelligence agency, The New York Times reported late Thursday.
In a story posted on the Times website, senior American officials and others briefed on the findings said the discovery indicates bin Laden used the group, Harakat-ul-Mujahedeen, as part of his support network inside Pakistan.
It raises questions about whether the group and others helped shelter and support the al-Qaida leader on behalf of Pakistan's spy agency.
The officials and analysts told the Times that Pakistan's intelligence agency had mentored Harakat and allowed it to operate in Pakistan for at least 20 years.
In tracing the calls on the cellphone, U.S. analysts have determined that Harakat commanders had called Pakistani intelligence officials, the senior American officials said. One said they had met. The officials added that the contacts were not necessarily about bin Laden and that there was no "smoking gun" showing that Pakistan's spy agency had protected bin Laden.
Beyond providing leads about why bin Laden was able to live comfortably for years in Abbottabad, a town dominated by the Pakistani military just 35 miles from the capital city of Islamabad, the discovery also may help shed light on bin Laden's secret odyssey after he slipped away from U.S. forces in the Tora Bora region of Afghanistan nearly 10 years ago.
Harakat has especially deep roots in the area around Abbottabad, analysts familiar with the group told the Times. Its leaders have strong ties with both al-Qaida and Pakistani intelligence, known as Inter-Services Intelligence.
The senior American officials did not identify the commanders whose numbers were in the courier's cellphone but said the militants were in South Waziristan, where al-Qaida and other groups had been based for years. Harakat's network would have allowed bin Laden to pass on messages and money to Qaida members there and in other parts of Pakistan's tribal areas, analysts and officials said.
Bin Laden and his courier, Ibrahim Saeed Ahmed, were discovered by U.S. intelligence through a chance interception of an Ahmed phone call. That set in motion the secret CIA search of the Abbottabad region, culminating with the May 2 raid by Navy SEALs that killed bin Laden, Ahmed's brother Abrar and two other people.
Reached by the AP on his cell phone last month, Harakat chief Fazle-ur-Rahman Khalil dismissed suggestions that he may have been in touch with bin Laden while the al-Qaida leader was hiding in Abbottabad.
"It is 100 percent wrong, it's rubbish," Khalil said. "Osama did not have contact with anybody." The AP obtained Khalil's phone number from a former aide who has since left the group.
