Gomez helps Bayern complete job 

against Zürich

FC Bayern München cruised into the UEFA Champions League group stage after wrapping up a 3-0 aggregate triumph over FC Zürich in the play-offs.

Already two to the good from last week's home leg, Bayern's progress rarely looked in doubt once Mario Gomez put them 1-0 up in Switzerland after seven minutes. The four-time European champions can now look forward to discovering their group stage opponents in Thursday's draw.

It was Zürich who needed the early goal in front of their noisy support and they almost got it five minutes in when Jorge Teixeira and Amine Chermiti combined neatly, only for the latter to shoot wide. The hosts were soon silenced, though, when a speedy Bayern counterattack resulted in Thomas Müller squaring for Gomez to finish past Johnny Leoni.

With Bayern starting to assert their authority, Müller nearly twisted the knife four minutes later when he powered into the penalty area on the right but shot wide of Leoni's left-hand post. Though Urs Fischer's side were making their task harder with a degree of carelessness in possession, they nevertheless carved out opportunities of their own.

Manuel Neuer acrobatically clawed away Philippe Koch's dangerous cross and again kept Zürich at bay midway through the first half by punching out Ricardo Rodriguez's whipped free-kick. Jérôme Boateng also had to be alert to clear the danger after Dušan Djurić's set piece came off Silvan Aegerter eight minutes before the break.

Bayern had the chance to extinguish any hope Zürich had of coming back late in the first half, Gomez denied by Leoni after fine work from Franck Ribéry and Toni Kroos. The Germany striker should have doubled his tally from the resulting corner but put his header over.

Still seeking a breakthrough, Zürich started the second half brightly but had only Admir Mehmedi's wayward effort to show for their early endeavours. It was subsequently Jupp Heynckes' visitors who created the clearer openings, substitute Nils Petersen and the impressive Ribéry denied to prevent the German giants adding further gloss to a job well done.

The reigning champions moved into second place behind rivals Manchester City with a comfortable win at home to Spurs – though it needed one of Alex Ferguson's notorious half-time team talks to shake United from their slumber.

After a sluggish first 45 minutes, the United players were given the proverbial 'hairdryer' from Ferguson in the dressing room and the blast of hot air did the trick. Second half goals from Danny Welbeck, Anderson and Wayne Rooney meant United join City and Wolves as the only sides to make it two wins from two in the new Premier League campaign.

"We went into the dressing room at half-time and after a few choice words from the gaffer we came out and got started," admitted Welbeck later. The 20-year-old was paired with Wayne Rooney up front ahead of Dimitar Berbatov and the local lad repaid his manager's faith with an accomplished performance.

Welbeck's goal on 61 minutes – a glancing header from Tom Cleverley's cross – finally broke Tottenham's resistance after an hour in which Brad Friedel had made fine saves from Rooney and Anderson. And 15 minutes after opening the scoring Welbeck turned provider, sending Anderson clear with a deft flick that the Brazilian latched on to and drilled past Friedel. Three minutes from time Rooney made it 3-0, rising to nod home a Ryan Giggs cross with his new head of hair.

Spurs were desperately missing the creativity of Luka Modric in midfield and the defeat stretches their losing streak at Old Trafford to 22 years. Manager Harry Redknapp rued the way his side caved in during the final quarter.

"There was nothing in the game until they scored," said Redknapp. "We had as much of it as they did. But once they scored, I put another striker on and suddenly we went out of the game badly."

For Ferguson the result leaves him with an enviable problem, one that must make Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger sick. While the Gunners barely have enough decent players to field a starting XI, Old Trafford is overflowing with riches.

The side that beat Tottenham was the second youngest fielded by Ferguson in the 20 years of the Premier League and the impressive performances of youngsters like Phil Jones (19), Tom Cleverley (22) and Welbeck increases the pressure on established stars such as Rio Ferdinand, Ryan Giggs and Berbatov.

"We still believe in young players," said Ferguson. "That's what this club is about and I think all the fans appreciate that... we've always had confidence to play young players. But this group have such fantastic ability, it forces me to play them really."

Ten observations on Bongo Flava - ten years after

Although we tend to think of musical genres like hiplife, kwaito and bongo flava as the music of a new generation, many of them have existed for the past decade or so. Tanzanian bongo flava, once heralded as a localized version of hip hop, has ten years to its name. Around 2001 people started using the term 'bongo flava' after the radio show by that name playing local hip hop. The genre's trademark sound was pioneered by artists like Juma Nature, Gangwe Mobb and Dully Sykes. Their hits inspired countless one-day hit wonders, aided by a handful of producers, a limited set of keyboard presets and the urge to receive airplay and commercial recognition. In the five years after 2001, bongo flava developed into a genre with a distinct feel and a popularity beyond just Tanzanian youth - all of East Africa up to DR Congo and Rwanda now knows who Ali Kiba is.

After all these years there's still criticism: many artists are copy cats whose only concern is immediate commercial recognition, their lyrics are shallow and glorify greed, and so on. So, is bongo flava on the brink of extinction or is there still room for innovation? Wesley Sneijder will thrash out his future over the next 48 hours, after his move to Manchester United took a major step closer on Tuesday. The Dutch winger was hoping to hold formal talks with the Premier League club in London on Thursday, following his country’s friendly international with England at Wembley. But the riot-induced postponement of the fixture has moved that process forward, and now the 27-year-old will speak with his club, Inter Milan, on Wednesday to seek permission to begin negotiations in earnest. Sneijder hinted this week that informal talks have already begun over the transfer, with the two clubs close to arriving at a fee somewhere in the region of £32million. His representatives will be in Milan on Wednesday, hoping to speed up the process, which would allow the player to fly into England to thrash out the terms of a near £200,000 a week contract.

In the same paper, Peter Schmeichel has labelled criticism of David De Gea "ridiculous" after the Spanish goalkeeper's United debut in Sunday's Community Shield victory. The former Reds stopper said: "I think it is absolutely ridiculous, listening to people criticising him after one game."

Meanwhile, the opening round of Premier League fixtures, scheduled for this weekend, have been cast into doubt due to the rioting in several parts of Britain. London games are thought to be most under threat, with Tottenham due to host Everton, Aston Villa travelling to Fulham and QPR welcoming Bolton.

Chelsea seal £20m deal for Eurostar Lukaku

Romelu Lukaku could not contain his elation on Monday after completing a transfer that could make him British football's second most expensive teenager. 

The 18-year-old striker accepted Chelsea's terms for a five-year contract and had a medical at their Cobham training ground after the Stamford Bridge club agreed to an outlay that could exceed £20million. 

They are paying Anderlecht £13m, with up to £6m to follow in add-ons, and are handing over £3.3m, 25 per cent of the initial fee, to Lukaku's family, in a transfer clause he negotiated with the Belgian club. 

In return, Chelsea are calling the shots on the publicity front and insisting that his first interview be with their in-house television station after all the paperwork has been completed, which is expected to be tomorrow at the earliest.
