Fazul was planning attack on Uganda, says army

New information emerging out of Somalia indicates that documents found in the car of the East African Al-Qaeda leader, killed in Mogadishu two weeks ago reveal that he was planning to attack Kampala and Bujumbura.

The commander of the Ugandan peacekeeping contingent in Somalia, Col. Paul Lokech told journalists from Uganda, Burundi and Kenya currently on a visit in Mogadisgu that they had recovered papers from the vehicle Abdullah Fazul was driving with details of his planned attacks.

“According to the recovered documents, he had other plans of attacking Kampala and Bujumbura. But it’s not going to be safe anymore for the terrorists,” Col. Lokech said. Fazul was killed by the Somali Transitional Federal government forces after refusing to stop at a security check point.

Foreign fighters
Col. Lokech said Fazul was travelling to Abdi Aziz district in Mogadishu where foreign fighters have established a new base after they were dislodged from their old camp at the Interior ministry headquarters now occupied by Ugandan forces.
“He had come to brief them about the change of command after the death of Osama Bin Laden,” he said.

A Ugandan army officer, Lt. Col. Patrick Sihibwa, was killed by al-Shabaab near this old base as the militants were trying to recapture the strategic place taken from them by the Ugandan forces on June 4.

The African Union peacekeepers have encircled Bakara Market, the largest market in Mogadishu, which is under the control of the al-Shabaab militants.

“We don’t want to shell the market because we know the value of this market to the people of Somalia. But we will squeeze these terrorists to know that they have no option but to get out,” Lt. Col. Anthony Mbusi Lukwago, who is commanding the Hawal wadag sector, said.

He's been likened to Chelsea great Jose Mourinho, but just who is new Blues manager Andre Villas-Boas?

Like Mourinho when he arrived at Stamford Bridge in 2004, Villas-Boas is young (only 33), well educated and Portuguese - and like the former Chelsea boss he had no real pedigree as a footballer but still led Porto to a domestic and European treble in his first full season.

Both did their early coaching apprenticeships under Sir Bobby Robson, and Villas-Boas even worked for Mourinho at Porto, Chelsea and Internazionale before taking the plunge as a manager with Academica Coimbra.

But what about Villas-Boas’s management style, personality and character? Is he a charismatic leader like Mourinho? A fan, journalist and player’s dream but a chairman’s nightmare with outspoken outbursts and a tendency to drift into Ahmedinejad-style conspiracy theories? Do his teams look to win at all costs, regardless of style and panache? Or is he calm and collected, a friend of the players and a devotee to attacking football?

His background

Similar to Mourinho, Villas-Boas is from a wealthy Portuguese family (although with an English grandmother) and as a youth juggled his ability as a decent amateur player with his school and Uni studies.

While Mourinho came from footballing stock - his father was a professional and he himself played lower-league football for a couple of years - Villas-Boas never really played beyond amateur level and his break in coaching was as much through chance as anything: aged 16, he happened to live in the same apartment block as then-Porto coach Sir Bobby.

The two became friendly and Villas-Boas was offered the chance to intern at his boyhood club, doing his UEFA C badge aged only 17 and staying on while studying at Uni after the Englishman moved to Barcelona.

After graduating, the 21-year-old took a job coaching the British Virgin Islands before joining Porto again as an assistant scout under Mourinho, who he followed until 2009.

"What he did have is a determination to be the best he possibly could be," his former UEFA tutor, Scottish FA football development director Jim Fleeting, said. "He had a drive to find out as much as he possibly could about the subject he was dealing with.

"He had a great attention span, he was a very good listener, and he was very good at putting things across on the field. These are the kinds of skills that good coaches have."

His management record

Reportedly Mourinho was not happy that his protégé had left him so soon, but the chance of managing relegation-battling Academica was too much for Villas-Boas to ignore.

Villas-Boas saved the Coimbra club from relegation, guiding them to mid-table safety, and was promptly appointed Porto coach.

Not exactly the toughest job in European football - they had won 19 league titles and six of the last seven - but they came a poor third the previous campaign.

Expected to challenge at the very least, Villas-Boas nonetheless won in style as his team utterly dominated the domestic game and fired their way to Europa League glory, with striker Falcao scoring a record 17 goals in 14 games.

That, it seems, was enough for Chelsea, who know him well from his time working as a scout and decided that £13 million was no mean risk for a man who, at 33, is eight years younger than Mourinho when he took charge.

His coaching style

Villas-Boas is a more of a laid-back, cool customer than Mourinho, less inclined to explode at press conferences and devise bizarre, paranoid conspiracy theories. He is affable with the press and officials and is more chummy with the players than the distant, aloof, but no-less adored Jose.

He is still a top motivator though - the first thing he did after taking the Porto job was to make the team watch videos of bitter rivals Benfica celebrating their title win that summer.

Porto striker Hulk said: "That Villas-Boas was so young did not affect his work. We considered him to be experienced because of the way he spoke with us and the way he gave us space. He is a great person and a great coach. He has everything he needs to be the new Mourinho, even if he does not like to be compared to Jose."

With his academic, tactically-inclined background, Villas-Boas prefers a highly-organised, meticulous approach to planning and coaching that is reflected in his teams’ style of play - nicknamed 'Playstation Football' by some - and driven by game-to-game strategies focused on exploiting opponents’ weaknesses and countering their strengths.

A now-infamous leaked scouting report about Newcastle United from the 2005-6 season gives an insight to his methods. While the learnings are hardly bombshells - Jean Alain Boumsong is pinpointed as a weak link, with the partnership between Alan Shearer and Michael Owen the main threat - there are little gems that with hindsight show his judge of a player.

For example Charles N’Zogbia was later deemed surplus to requirements by Toon, but Villas-Boas spotted the beginnings of the excellent movement and speed in defensive transitions that have made him one of the more sought-after players in England; furthermore, while fans of Arsenal and Manchester United may wonder why they never looked to keeper Shay Given, the Irishman’s weakness at coming for crosses is shown to be a major cause of conceding through the second ball.

Most importantly though is the thoroughness and attention to detail that his bullet-points and annotated diagrams give, all in powerpoint: Boumsong’s positional weaknesses and Nolberto Solano’s runs inside are detailed visually, incisive and easy to understand both for staff and players.

Calm, collected, intelligent and thorough - there is more of an air of the Jose Guardiola or Frank Rijkaard about Villas-Boas, although it is said that he does not react well when put under pressure at press conferences. But then who does?

His playing style

'Playstation Football' was alluded to earlier, and it is not just the organisation and work-rate of his teams that resemble a video game: they dominate possession and score bagfuls of goals.

Like Mourinho’s Chelsea, they work incredibly hard off the ball and use a 4-3-3 formation, but unlike Jose’s teams he does not favour a direct approach to the counter attack, instead asking them to retain possession and stay patient - much like Barcelona and Spain.

Indeed, last season they went unbeaten domestically, drawing three SuperLiga games and winning the remaining 27, racking up 84 points: four more than Manchester United did en route to the Premier League in eight fewer games.

They scored 73 goals in 30 games and conceded a meagre 16, while in Europe they simply blew away the opposition, scoring five goals in four consecutive matches en route to the final.

So will he succeed?

In theory, he brings the organisation and motivational ability of Mourinho with the attractive style of Guardiola.

What we don’t know, though, is if he has the ‘alpha’ character required to deal with the egos and factions - dressing and board-room - that come part and parcel with the Chelsea job.

That is what did for Luis Felipe Scolari and, it could be argued, Carlo Ancelotti: the rails came off for the Italian after the sacking of nice-guy assistant Ray Wilkins, who was able to unite the players with his understanding of British, French and Latin culture.

If Villas-Boas can rein-in and get the best out of the likes of Didier Drogba, John Terry, Frank Lampard and Fernando Torres, Chelsea have the resources, players and every chance of returning to the summit of English football - and gain the European trophy Roman Abramovich almost pathologically craves,

The outgoing Sudanese Ambassador to the United Republic of Tanzania, His Excellency Abdelbagi H. Kabeir today bid farewell to the EAC Secretary General, Amb. Dr. Richard Sezibera at the EAC Headquarters in Arusha, Tanzania.  Ambassador Abdelbagi Kabeir is returning to Khartoum after a 4-years service in Tanzania.

At the brief function, Ambassador Kabeir congratulated the Secretary General for assuming the mantle of steering the EAC regional integration process in the next 5 years. He further affirmed that the feature of Sudan was very bright with the pending creation of the new Republic of Southern Sudan, adding that “we see this whole process as reproduction of the family rather than a dis-integration”. The Sudanese Envoy was full of gratitude for the support rendered to him by the EAC Secretariat and the Partner States during his tour of duty in Tanzania.

The EAC Secretary General congratulated the people of Sudan for their continued engagement in the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) that was now leading to a rebirth of a new Nation in Africa; the Republic of Southern Sudan on 9 July 2011. “We are happy that the people of Sudan signed the CPA and we will continue to offer support to make sure any other outstanding issues under it (CPA) is resolved peacefully; asserted Amb. Sezibera.

The Secretary General urged the people of Sudan to continue navigating the ship towards peace and stability, “we will be watching the birth of a new state born out of the will of the people of Southern Sudan and we assure you that we shall continue to be your good neighbours” concluded the Secretary General.  

The Sudanese Government appointed H.E Abdelbagi Kabeir as its permanent representative to the East African Community in December 2010. While presenting his accreditation letter signed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Sudan to then EAC Secretary General on 1 December 2010, Ambassador Kabeir said “our vision is to talk about integration and unity and that is why I am here”. He said that his appointment was a manifestation of Sudan’s commitment to the region’s integration process and economic development.

H.E Abdelbagi Kabeir said that “without closer ties with our neighbors, we shall not have a better future for the development of our countries and my government will in future look at the possibility of becoming a member of the East African Community”.  

Ngasa for trials in United States

Azam`s most expensive striker Mrisho Ngasa is expected to board a Seattle bound flight on July 6 for a series of trials with the city’s top flight side of Sounders FC.

Lance Lopes, the Seattle Sounders FC chairman who has been in Dar es Salaam for talent scouting, said Ngasa’s trials duration with the team will be limited to two weeks.

During his trials, Ngasa is expected to play in a friendly tie for the North American side against visiting Manchester United on July 20.

Lopes said he is happy to open the opportunities for Tanzanian players and

Ngasa has been given the challenge to open the gate for others.

He also said America want to work with a hand in glove cooperation to promote soccer in Tanzania through club level.

The Sounders official has expressed his sincere appreciation to have the opportunity in the entire process of talent identification for budding players in Tanzania.

Besides soccer, the Sounders FC is also looking forward to extend cooperation in culture, tourism and investment where possible.

Azam Football Club chairman Saidi Mohammed said his club has been pleased to release their player to search greener pastures in America.

He thanked African Lyon club for facilitating the deal after keeping aside their rivalry in the Mainland premiership.

Lyon has close cooperation with the Sounders club.

Mohammed said this is a rare opportunity for Ngasa to exploit his football potentiality with a view of enhancing his personal career as well as flapping high the national flag overseas.

The Azam chairman said his club has no grudges for players aspiring for career development overseas.

"Ngassa will be the first Tanzanian soccer player to play against Manchester United which is a rare opportunity and something to be proud of. This is the key to unlock the doors of playing overseas, not only for him but also to the rest of the other players who are on standby at home,” said the Azam chairman.

The Azam official said this might be the chance to open the gate for others as well should Ngasa succeed in the trials.

The former Young Africans star, Ngasa, who has booked a permanent first choice line-up of the Tanzania national soccer team, Taifa Stars, had previously attended trials with London’s

West Ham United before being demoted.

African Lyon official Rahim Zamunda said his club picked up Ngasa for the trials basing on his superb performance.

Zamunda said Lyon has been transparent and objective to pick up the player for the benefit of the nation.

Paris Saint-Germain are prepared to make a £10m offer for out-of-favour Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov, according to the Daily Star.

The Bulgarian was the Premier League's joint top scorer last season but found opportunities limited in the United first team after Christmas as Javier Hernandez andWayne Rooney became Ferguson's first-choice stike partnership.

The Star reports that a meeting took place at the weekend between PSG and Berbatov's agent Emile Dantchev.

Berbatov is out of contract next summer and is yet to agree a new deal at the club. Sir Alex Ferguson is known to be reluctant to extend the Bulgarian's contract with Rooney and Hernandez forming such a potent partnership and Michael Owen and Danny Welbeck seen as suitable cover.United signed Berbatov for £30.75m from Tottenham Hotspur in 2008 and he has scored 47 goals in 128 games for the club.
